Time for family

For new parents, planning to start a family can be an extremely daunting yet rewarding task. There’s nothing quite like the process of creating your own nest that brings forth even the most dormant maternal or paternal instincts.

Bringing a child into this world means taking on the lifelong commitment that you will dedicate time, effort and your resources to ensure the best future for this little being.

Unlike all other investments, this is one that comes without the promise of guarantee returns, and yet will have enormous impact on your lifestyle. Whereas once you might have been the life of the party, painting the town red with your usual gang come the weekend, having your little one means having to make sacrifices in the form of baby-sitting or finding someone trustworthy who is willing do the task for you.

If you’ve given the above mentioned serious thought, welcome to the family club.

While there are no hard and fast rules to being a good parent, ample preparation even before your child arrives is one of the few things to keep in mind. Here are some tips to ensure a healthy baby by making some changes to your diet and lifestyle:

-  If you’re a regular clubber, now’s the time to cut back on the booze and second-hand smoking. If you’re a smoker, needless to say, start quitting now.

-  This may sound really unfair, but for caffeine addicts, zero seems to be the best way to go when you’re trying to get pregnant. Either that, or you can try burying your coffee bags at your aunt’s house. Or something.

-  Work it: Nobody said that pregnancy is an excuse for you to laze on your couch in front of the TV. Getting in the habit of doing light exercises such as walking or pilates regularly can be beneficial in helping you get pregnant if you’re overweight, and keep you in shape post-pregnancy.

-  Taking a pre-natal supplement that’s rich with folic acid (ideally around 400mg), calcium and iron early on can reduce birth and spinal defects in your baby by up to 70%.

-  Doc check: If you’re considering pregnancy, do make an appointment with your ob-gyn to ensure that your blood pressure and cholesterol levels, among other things, are ok.

Have a safe and happy pregnancy!
